SOME NICE THINGS SAID ABOUT CHRIS AND/OR HIS WORK:

[THE MEAT MARKET] Imagine ‘Natural Born Killers’-era Oliver Stone directing a short film about the meat industry after being up all night sipping absinthe and watching “Patton” and “Apocalypse Now”. What you’ve got is the wildly electric and beautifully crafted satire “The Meat Market”, one of those films, never mind short or long, that you studiously watch the first time for the plot specifics and then again and again just to gawk at the heady excesses of style. And like the most passionate, politically charged films of Mr. Stone, The Meat Market is fully primed to piss some people off while making others stand up and cheer, “Right on!” –Daniel Wible, Film Threat

[EXPECTING] I loved everything about this film. I love that it is a bare bones production that abandons the luxuries other films have at their disposal – high def cameras, elaborate art direction, fancy camera moves – and hinges itself on raw performance. I love that its story is told on a static set, yet you are totally involved with these two characters on a totally real emotional level. I love that the subject of the film is expertly crafted around the drastic changes in the emotional underbelly of a conversation. And it isn’t boring – it’s great – almost riveting. It’s as though Chris Ohlson can see humanness so clearly and in his films he hovers a magnifying glass over the human condition, then whispers for us to come take a look. I think he is a true artist in every sense of the word. –AC Abbott, Festival Director, The Dallas Video Festival

[THE SPIN CYCLE] The Spin Cycle is a great looking short, made even better by knock out performances from Candice Bruder and Andy Buck. –Eric Campos, Film Threat

[THE MEAT MARKET] Ohlson again proves he is a unique filmmaker with an eye on the unusual. His films may be too wild and unusual for some tastes, but they are never dull or typical. Most importantly, The Meat Market acts as much as a resume for Austin talent as it does absurdist masterpiece. –Lodger, Filethirteen.com

[THE MEAT MARKET] Filled with subtle and not so subtle jabs at the evils of corporate farming, director Chris Ohlson has crafted a well-written, somewhat queasy character study wrapped in a political agenda. –Merle Bertrand, Film Threat

[11th & CONGRESS] 11th & Congress is a powerful short film from the mind of Chris Ohlson… It features professional, sleek shots and perfect surrealistic editing, resulting in an absolute masterpiece of a short film –Baal-Peor, Screaming Stoner Video

[THE MEAT MARKET] The film itself is crafted with a directorial style as unique as Kubrick or Tarantino, though absolutely unlike either. The fluid melding of rich film, video, black & white and super-8 keeps the tone surreal enough to let us question the motivations ourselves. It’s done now and I’m left sitting alone on my couch. Should I feel encouraged, amused or insulted? It’s like I just saw Evel Kneivel break every bone in his body and all I can think about is getting my own new Kawasaki. I can’t explain it, and I’m done trying. –Brian K White, Glossy News
